DUBAI – 4 DAY TOUR

Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates, located within the emirate of the same name. The emirate of Dubai is located southeast of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian peninsula and is one of the seven emirates that make up the country.

It has the largest population in the UAE (2,106,177) and the second largest land territory area (4,14 km2) after Abu Dhabi.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the national capital, are the only two emirates to have veto power over critical matters of national  importance in the country’s legislature. The city of Dubai is located on the emirates northern coastline and heads up the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. Dubai is nowadays often misperceived as a country or city state and in some cases, the UAE as a whole has been described as ‘Dubai’.

Today, Dubai has emerged as a cosmopolitan metropolis that has grown steadily to become a global city and a business and cultural hub of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region. Although Dubai’s economy was historically built on the oil industry, the emirates western style model of business drives its economy with the main revenues now coming from tourism, real estate and financial services. Dubai has recently attracted world attention through many innovative large construction projects and sports events. The city has become symbolic for its skyscrapers and high rise buildings such as the world’s tallest Burj Khalifa, in addition to ambitious development projects including man-made islands, hotels and some of the largest shopping malls in the region and the world. This increased attention has also highlighted labor and human rights issues concerning the city’s largely south Asian paid work force.

DRINKING WATER: tap water is safe to use although bottled water, which is served in hotels and restaurants, is recommended for drinking.

DRESS CODE: Dubai is Islamic country and clothing should be modest. During the winter months light sweaters are recommended. Beach wear is accepted at beach clubs, hotels and public beaches. During the daytime, the dress code is fairly casual although more exclusive restaurants may expect guests to dress more formally during the evening.

TRANSPORTATION: taxis are readily available and reasonably priced. Metered taxis are recommended over private taxis whose rates are negotiable. There is a surcharge on taxis from Dubai airport.

SHOPPING: Dubai is known as a shopper’s paradise. Many of the world’s finest goods are available at prices well below what would be paid in other parts of the world. The Gold Souk is deservedly famous for its jewellery. Bargaining is accepted although the basic gold price is set and is dependent on weight.

In the main souks, you will find everything from a range of textiles and tailors to perfumed oils and electronic items.

Bargaining is expected and a discount of 15 to 25 per cent is usually given.

WHAT TO WEAR

Because Dubai is in a Muslim country, clothing should be modest in order to respect local customs. Women can wear bikinis and bathing suits while on beaches, but should not wear them in public.

DOS AND DONTS

  • There is a zero tolerance in Dubai in relation to drugs and illegal substances.
  • Topless sunbathing is not permitted on the beaches.
  • Women should dress sensibly and avoid wearing revealing outfits when in busy areas.
  • It is not appropriate for men to walk along the street bare-chested. It is very advisable that females avoid wearing very short skirts or revealing tops as you may attract unwanted attention.

DUBAI BUSINESS DO’S AND DONTS

The most important influence in business etiquette in Dubai is religion.

By western standards locals are very devout in their practices and this includes city workers who opt for designer suits rather than traditional garb.

Regular daily prayer and observation of religious festivals is standard, so be prepared for how this might impact on business dealings.

Visitors should be aware that Friday is the Muslim day of prayer, so scheduling meetings, lunches or even casual drinks for this holy day is a no-no.

WHAT TO CARRY

  • Travel documents (passport, ticket and visa)
  •  A suit case with all belongings
  • Personal effects
  • Official wear for meetings
  • Camera
  • Small bag to carry items daily
  • Sun glasses
